Frozen Berry Cloud

Hi Readers!

What a lovely day! I finally got my workout schedule all figured out: Well, I have this week figured out!

Sun: Fire 45/Stretch 10
Mon: Fire 45 EZ
Tues: Run 2 miles (AM) HIIT 20, FBB Strength (PM)
Wednesday: OFF
Thursday: Run 2 miles (AM), HIIT 15, FBB Strength (PM)
Friday: OFF
Saturday: Run 2 miles, Core 20/Stretch 40

I decided on having 2 full rest days. If I decide to do anything extra on those days, great, but there is no pressure. I’m already nervous about following this schedule the second week of August – my sister/niece/nephew are coming up from OK to visit us. What do you do when you have company over? Do you still make time to work out? I know that week will be a challenge for me.

I forgot to post a pic of my lunch earlier today. Here is my grilled chicken salad with Poppyseed dressing:

Minestrone soup:

So delicious. What do you like to eat for lunch?

Dinner was the always delicious Tilapia, brown rice and green beans:

Yes this is the same pic from yesterday — I ate my dinner too quickly before I had the chance to take a pic, but you get the idea!

Best part of the day: dessert/post workout snack:

Mixed Berry Cloud

You will need:

 3/4 cup almond milk

 1 cup mixed berries

a small pinch of each to thicken it up

Throw it all in a blender (or a magic bullet in my case):

And here’s what you get:

I didn’t blend it completely, that way there were chunks of berries still inside. It is a freezing cold fruit sorbet. Thanks Susan for the recipe — it is adapted from Hungry Girl.

Tonight the plans are cleaning up the house, getting some TurboFire in, and getting to bed early. I stayed up too late last night and I’ve been dragging all day as a result.

Question of the day: When do you go to bed at night? I try to get to bed before 10pm because it takes me a while to fall asleep.

The Missing Banana Truck

Hi Readers!

I am so happy to see that I am not the only one who goes to so many grocery stores on a weekly basis. (and I’m also glad to see that I’m not the only one who has had odd results from VOO – I should just stick with the original recipe!) Here is where I go for grocery supplies:

Cub Foods (regular grocery store): basic cooking things (sugar, salt, almond milk, eggs, some produce, snacks for J)

Trader Joes: more produce (sweet potatoes, bagged lettuce, etc), granola bars, vitamins, almond butter, peanut butter, jam, frozen meals (orange chicken, egg rolls, frozen veggies, frozen brown rice, frozen berries), soups, bread, clif bars, larabars, trail mix

Healthy Ways (local health food store): protein powder, larabars, chia seeds, chia meal, flaxseed

Target: paper products (toilet paper, paper towels, etc), trail mix packs (only Target has the certain brand I like!), bottled water

Our Target did get produce, but not much. I was a little disappointed when I got there – they had 1 aisle of produce: grapes, blueberries, raspberries, bagged lettuce/spinach and baby carrots. Eek. I didn’t even see bananas! Now, this was their first day with fresh groceries, so maybe the Banana Truck didn’t make it up to MN yet. I’m hopeful!

I’m still working on my training schedule, does anyone have any tips? The running plan is only 3 days per week of running, FBB strength plan is only 2 days per week and then I wanted to sprinkle in a few TurboFire workouts throughout the week.

What is your workout schedule like? Or do you like to go with the flow and decide each day?

Lunch was really good today, I had a bowl of this soup:

And a sandwich made with turkey, veggie cheese and green peppers on whole wheat.

Look how gooey the veggie cheese got!

Dinner was equally amazing. I made Paula Deen’s Baked Tilapia. You know what that means: BUTTER.

Here is the tilapia before it went in the oven.

I also made brown rice and some steamed veggies.

Here’s my plate:

So good.

I have brownies in the oven.right.now. I made them for J to take to work – pray for me that I don’t eat them all as soon as they are done!

Question of the day: What is your favorite treat? I love brownies, cookies and ice cream. And pie. And cake. Ok I love them all but I’d have to pick brownies as my favorite. Especially when they are really gooey on the inside.

Have a great night!

First Attempt at VOO

Hi Readers!

Last night I decided it would be the perfect time to try out Angela’s Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Vegan Overnight Oats. I had to make a few changes, I omitted the raisins (didn’t have any) and I used chia meal instead of chia seeds (didn’t have any seeds!). I was hopeful that the recipe would still work.

Last night:

I whipped them up, just like Angela suggested.

This morning:

I thought they would solidify more (?)

In the glass with some maple syrup on top:

It seemed pretty thin:

(those were all the chunks from the bottom)

It was ok. I think the chia seeds would give it a better texture than the chia meal. I am picking up more seeds today and will give this another shot. It smelled absolutely divine. And I ate it anyway! I will try again later this week.

I updated my blog roll last night – if I missed you, please let me know! I’d be happy to add you to the list. I love finding new blogs to read and learn from.

J and I recently signed up for the Medtronic TC 10 Mile Race in October. Our last race was a Half Marathon in July (before that it was our marathon!) and I’m excited for a shorter race. I am working on a training schedule that can incorporate running, TurboFire and strength training. I recently read this book (FBB for short) and will use the workouts in here as well:

I’ll do a more thorough review of this book later on today. I need to reread a few parts and get my schedule all figured out. I’d love to get some feedback on it as well. FBB is all about lifting weights (and not the pink “Barbie doll” weights). The author writes about how strength training is key in getting the body you want.

I’m ready for my TurboFire workout, then I am off to our beloved Target store, which recently added fresh groceries. I can’t wait to see what the store looks like! For now I shop at 3 different grocery stores and it would be great to only have 1 or 2. Cross your fingers that Target has everything I need!

Question of the day: Where do you shop for groceries? Do you have to go to a few different stores to get everything you need?

Enjoy your Sunday!

Fresh Fruit & Family

Hi everyone, how is your weekend so far?

Mine has been great, mostly because I spent most of the morning and afternoon with my sister in law D and soon-to-be aunt in law E. We have so much fun together.  E is getting married to Uncle M next year, so we got to talk about all sorts of wedding stuff. She brought her books/magazines and we talked about colors, flowers, dresses, food, cake, songs, etc. Everything. It was fun for me because J and I had a small wedding with just family, and then six months later we had a huge party/reception for friends/family. With E’s wedding being so large, it is definitely fun to help plan and share ideas.

But the best part of the day (except for seeing my niece Lil D) were these:

O

M

G

Can you believe those cinnamon rolls?

They reminded me of her:

 (source)

How about these delicious cherries, strawberries and almonds:

Or, can you believe these beautiful grapes and peaches?

They were all bought from the Minneapolis Farmers Market (which I have sadly never been to, but I am planning on going next week now!). All of the fruits were so delicious.

I had 1/3 of a cinnamon roll, and a small plate full of fruit. And a bunch of almonds. They were delicious and had some type of crunchy coating. Yum.

After hours of wedding talk, I finally came home and played some Mario Kart on the Wii. I didn’t do well (no surprise) but I actually had fun (what a concept, right?)

The rest of the night should be pretty low key for J and me, I’m planning on putting more features on the blog, updating my blog roll (if you haven’t told me you’d like to be included, please let me know!), updating TurboFire, etc. Oh and I also have to DO my TurboFire workout for the day: 20 min Abs, 40 min Stretch. Should be a great workout!

Have a great night!

Taco Friday

Hi Readers! I hope you’re having a great Friday!

I am really sore from my TurboFire Sculpt dvd that I did yesterday. It was only 30 minutes long and used a resistance band (which usually isn’t as effective for me versus hand weights), but holy moly my biceps and triceps are burning today. I love it!

Breakfast this morning was the usual GM:

Snack was mixed nuts and some strawberries, and here’s lunch:

Oh.my.gosh. These are the best steak tacos I have ever eaten. I have no idea where they come from. A co-worker of mine asked me a few weeks ago if I wanted tacos for lunch, I said yes, and then he left. He didn’t ask what kind I wanted, how many, nothing.

Fifteen minutes later, he emerges with a little bag for me and said the total was $3. I paid him and opened the bag and found the 2 most wonderful tacos ever. They come with lime wedges, greens (not sure what this is?), onions and sauce.

I have no idea about calorie content, fiber, fat, anything. I have no idea what the sauce is. I asked my co-worker and all I got back was a shrug. I asked a different co-worker (who also gets these tacos) and he told me that they are made by some woman who sells them from her house. You have to call and place an order and then go pick them up.

So I don’t know where these tacos are from, who made them or where to get them. All I know is that they are delicious and they are my way of celebrating Cookie Friday.

Tonight is date night so J and I are going to see Inception at the “really really nice movie theater” – I’ll take some pics so you can see what I mean. I need to get a TurboFire workout in after work and before we take off for dinner. Busy night!

Question of the Day: Do you celebrate Cookie Friday (or in a different form like Taco Friday)? Is there one meal/snack you really look forward to all day? I really look forward to my morning smoothie because I’m hungry in the morning!

The Beauty of Blogs

Hi Readers! 🙂

Today I finished the TurboFire HIIT 15 minute workout. I know, 15 minutes sounds short, but this is pretty intense. I followed it up with a 30 minute sculpting routine and I am feeling good now!

My afternoon snack was a MIM. (Muffin in a Minute!) I saw the idea today on The Art of Kaztronomy

I used the original recipe, except I used ground chia meal instead of flax meal.

Fresh out of the microwave:

Out of the mug and onto a plate:

It tasted very much like a bran muffin — would be good with some PB spread on top!

After TurboFire I made dinner.

Dinner: Chicken/pasta/veg with a side of green beans (Thank you Trader Joes!)

 Lots of beautiful veggies!

Tomorrow night J is taking me to Inception – have you seen it? I’ve heard it is really good but kind of confusing? I need to make sure I pay attention!

I was thinking today about what I want my blog to become, and I realized I need to just go with the flow. Every day I think of something new to write about, or a new tab I want to add to my menu of options. I need to just take it day by day and enjoy the ride! I am already overwhelmed with the amount of comments and emails I have already received and I cannot wait to see where this goes.

I first started reading food/healthy living blogs about 4-5 months ago. I stumbled upon a few healthy living blogs. These women were all strong, fit and healthy. I found it motivating to read about their lives, their exercise and food habits and I started implementing changes in my own life.

I had recently lost some weight with Weight Watchers, but I never really knew much about food. What is healthy? What is unhealthy? How much is too much? How much is too little? Seeing photographs of food and reading why certain foods are good for you truly helped me gain a better understanding of what I should be eating throughout the day. I was training for my marathon at the time and I was clueless about what to eat and how to fuel my body. I learned a lot from the blogs and I hope readers learn from my blog as well!

So do we really need another food/healthy living blog? Of course! The more ideas and motivation we get from blogs, the better off we will all be. Another reason I loved reading blogs is because they detailed accounts of actual people. Look at the beauty you can find in food and in feeling healthy. Today I read Live Laugh Eat  which had beautiful pictures of a dragonfruit – who knew they were so beautiful?!

I’m working on my workout dvd reviews, they should be up later tonight!

Question of the Day: What makes a good blog? Would you like to be included in my blog roll?

TurboFire!

Hi Readers! 🙂

Today was a rest day and it felt so good to get caught up on things: grocery shop, laundry, wash dishes, RELAX, etc.

Please check out my running tab — I wrote about running my first marathon this year.

Dinner was the always delicious: Salmon and veggies

I took more veggies after this too.

And some grapes:

No, I didn’t eat ALL of these, I keep them washed in a bowl in the fridge for easy snacking. 🙂

Question: What do you like to do on your rest day?

TURBOFIRE

Since this is my new “passion”, I figured I should write more about it!

I have done Turbo Jam before

And I loved that it didn’t really feel like exercise. I know what you’re thinking, that I sound like an infomercial, but its true! The music is REAL music, not like some workout dvds where you can envision a guy with a keyboard randomly playing keys that are probably labeled “techno” and “hot beat” or something like that.

But, like other workout programs, I soon became bored and put my poor Turbo Jam dvds back on the shelf. Then I moved onto other things: 30 Day Shred, Biggest Loser dvds, etc. Then I started running Half Marathons, yadda yadda yadda, then a full marathon and then…

Nothing. I didn’t exercise for almost 3 weeks. I needed something. I was burnt out on running and wasn’t interested in anything. Then I saw a post on Fitnessista’s page about TurboFire. I immediately got excited. I immediately called J and he immediately ordered it for me (a surprise! Even though I was going to buy it later that day…)

Here’s what I got:

dvds, class schedule, meal plan, 5 day inferno plan, hiit info

I already know how to eat (its just a matter of actually DOING it), but it was nice that there were so many recipes, suggestions, etc.

You can see the breakdown of the dvds under my TurboFire tab. But, I wanted to talk a bit about HIIT workouts.

HIIT: High Intensity Interval Training

Wikipedia: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) or sprint interval training is an exercise strategy that is intended to improve performance with short training sessions. HIIT is a form of cardio which is beneficial to burning fat in a short and intense workout.

It is effective because it raises your resting metabolic rate, which means you are burning MORE calories than normal when you are just hanging out (or being a couch potato). It also means that you are working out for a shorter amount of time but reaping the benefits long after the workout is complete. TurboFire claims to burn 9x more fat because it uses HIIT.

I think of it this way: would you rather run easy for an hour or hard for ½ hour? Sure, easy runs can be fun, but who has the time? Honestly, HIIT saves me time which I think most people are short on. We are all always on the go, with no or little time to exercise. Make use of your time and make your workouts worth it!

So you’re new to this whole HIIT thing and not sure what it really means?
Here’s an example:

Warm up
Sprint for 30 seconds (and I mean S-P-R-I-N-T!)
Rest (walk) for 60 seconds
Sprint for 30 seconds
Rest (walk) for 60 seconds
Repeat 5-6 times (again, this is just an example)

HIIT makes it easy to go all out because you get time to recover.

For more info on the TurboFire program, check out Beachbody.com.

Question: Do you like to use workout programs like TurboFire or Insanity? Or do you like to mix it up?
