Smells Like Squash

Happy Friday Friends 🙂

It is almost the weekend and I couldn’t be happier – time to relax and unwind. Last weekend was so busy for Jason and me – Twins game, birthday party, 10 mile race. Ok that doesn’t sound like much, but to me that is too much for one weekend! I like having at least one lazy day.

Thursday night I finally cracked open the spaghetti squash. It took me quite a while to get the thing cut in half! But I did, and after following these instructions I had this:

It smelled like..squash. 🙂 But I knew once I poured the beef/tomato sauce mixture (plus some Garlic Gold) on top it would be wonderful:

And it was! I really didn’t know what to expect – I’ve had spaghetti squash years ago and I think it was just topped with butter – either way I didn’t remember it at all. But I will definitely make this again. I’d love to try Jessica’s Squash and Cheese. If I had had any soy cheese I would have tried it last night, but I thought I’d stay safe and go the marinara meat sauce route 🙂

I know I just ran that 10 mile race on Sunday – and before that I had kind of decided to not run anymore – but I’m changing my mind. It felt so good to MOVE outside in the fresh air. And when I read Beck on the Run, N Her Shoes and The Kitchen of a Runner I start to feel like I want to run more.

The reason I bring this up is that I am considering training for another marathon next year. Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, MN is celebrating its 35th year and somehow that is really tugging at me to train again. I have time to decide, to register, to train and all that. But I wanted to put it in the blog to make it more permanent, you know?

If you’ve read my first marathon story, then you know that it didn’t really go as planned. In a way I want to try it again to see how I do. If I give 100% again, what will my outcome be? I’m excited just thinking about it.

Questions:

1. What are your plans for the weekend? Anything fun? Do you like to have 1 lazy day like me? What will you be doing on 10-10-10?

2.  Do you like participating in events? What was your favorite one? To be honest, one day I would love to run the Boston Marathon — I think I would feel very accomplished if I were to qualify and run that race.

3. Favorite fall treat so far this year? I really liked the Pumpkin Pie Smoothie I made last week and of course the Pumpkin Banana Bread was delicious as well. I can’t wait for Pumpkin Pie at Thanksgiving 🙂

Have a great weekend!

Falling in Love Again

Thanks everyone for the nice wishes during my 10 mile run yesterday! It meant so much. And I have to admit…

I’m falling in love with running again. 🙂

It felt so good to just MOVE and to feel so alive and to feel the blood pumping through my legs! It was a brisk Sunday morning – I think it was between 30 and 40 degrees at 5am – it warmed up a bit before the race started at 7am.

But it was still cold!

Jason and I ran separately – I didn’t want to feel any pressure to run faster or slower, so we just went our separate ways. We ended up finishing only a few minutes apart. The entire time during the race I felt great: alive, healthy, well, excited and pumped up. I just wanted to finish and I wanted to be proud of myself. Even though I quit running a while ago, I still have a good aerobic base (I think) which helped me with this race. My time:

10 min/miles is really good (to me!)considering how much I haven’t been running. It was honestly one of the better races I have participated in – what helped was that there was NO PRESSURE. And yes it has always been myself putting pressure on me – no one else. Plus I think 10 miles is such a good distance: it is long and rough, but still doable. It wasn’t so long that I thought I could have hurt myself by not training properly. Again, I think all of the cardio in Turbo Jam helped me out tremendously. Here’s my finisher shirt:

They didn’t have finisher medals for the 10 mile participants – to be honest I was super disappointed! But the shirt is really nice so it was worth it J

So, I will not pressure on myself to run as much as I did in the beginning of the year, but I think I will throw a run in here and there. And I am thinking about running in this race:

Just another reason for Jason and I to have good costumes this year – we can wear them at the race too!

Questions:

  1. Have you ever participated in a race? What was your favorite one? Would you do another? I can’t believe I’m saying this…but I am thinking more and more about training for another marathon next Spring – if you read my recap you know that my first marathon didn’t go as planned. I kind of want to redeem myself. But I don’t know if I can go through that whole process again. I still have time to think about it.
  2. What is a “new-to-you” exercise that you would love to try? Zumba? Yoga? Running? Cross country skiing? Shake Weight? J I would love to rock climb. Jason and I went rock climbing for our first date and we haven’t been back since! It was so much fun and an excellent workout – my arms and legs burned for days afterward. I would love to rock climb more often – even if only once or twice a month.
  3. What was the highlight of your weekend?

***Oh, and I the 2 times I was drunk at a police station were for DUI nights. The police department held a Citizen’s Academy – where 20-25 residents in the area could take a class where they would learn about the police dept, the fire dept, the different weapons, types of crimes, investigations. One of the nights was DUI night – where they would have volunteers (one of them being ME) drink alcohol (In a controlled environment) until you reached the limit – which I think is 0.08 (?) and then the officers would have you complete the field sobriety tests in front of the residents (walk in a straight line, repeat the ABCs backwards, etc). Let’s just say I am a total lightweight and getting to 0.08 is drunk for me! It was pretty hilarious. Then one of the officers would drive you home. It was all for education!***

Have a great day!

Cinnamon Raisin Dumbbells

Happy September 1st!

I was just thinking a few days ago that I cannot believe it is almost September – where has this summer gone?

Ugh. But you know what? I’ve been super excited for September to begin because today marks the first day of Tina’s 30 Days of Reflection for Self-Love. Please head over to her site if you haven’t already. Are you in?

Last night I ran AGAIN – woah, I don’t run for weeks and suddenly I’m getting back into it. I ran 4 miles along my favorite trail and it felt great. I mean, how could you not enjoy your time here:

Ok those clouds are looking kind of scary in that last pic – I was booking it to get home because I didn’t want to get caught in the rain. I don’t have a Garmin (am I the only one without one?) but I wanted the same effect, so I duct-taped a brick to my wrist – ok not really, but seriously how do you run with that big honking thing?

None of my eats were really special yesterday, except for breakfast. It was all thanks to Rudi’s Organic Bakery:

Rudi’s was kind enough to send me four loaves of bread to test out. These are some serious loaves of bread!

(top left: 14 Grain, top right: Colorado Cracked Wheat, bottom left: Cinnamon Raisin, bottom right: Honey Sweet Whole Wheat)

I could totally use the Cinnamon Raisin Loaf for weights — it was so dense 🙂

I toasted one of each slice:

Jason and I tried ½ piece of each, and let me tell you, they were awesome. Our favorite was the 14 Grain loaf. The slices were small, but thick and very filling. We had a smear of strawberry preserves on top and it was so delicious.

The Cinnamon Raisin loaf was so hearty and crunchy — and each slice had huge raisins mixed in. The Cracked Wheat definitely had that “wheaty”, grainy taste and the Honey Sweet Whole Wheat was a very satisfying piece of bread, with just a hint of sweet honey flavor.

Check out their website to find Rudi’s products in your area! They also offer Gluten Free Breads as well (I’m looking at you Alyssa!) Thanks Rudi’s!

And be sure to check out Laury’s giveaway: Amazing Grass and Blender Bottle!

What is your favorite way to eat bread? A sandwich? French toast? With butter? Nut butter? My favorite is toasted with a little bit of butter and cinnamon.

Where do you exercise? At a gym? Your house? Outside?

Have a good one,

Holly
