Spam Queen

Good Morning Friends 🙂
I’m glad I’m not the only one on Earth without a Garmin. Maybe I’ll get one someday, but there are many things I would rather get first, like a new bedroom set. Jason and I are saving up for a new set and I hope it looks something like this:

I will not apologize for my love of cabin type furniture. I live in MN and that’s what we like here! 🙂 I would love to have my whole house decorated with wood logs, pine trees, bear pillows, canoe bookshelves, etc. You get the idea.
I wasn’t sure if I would post this or not, but after thinking about it, I decided that I had to put this out there. I had to get it off my chest.  I have written to a few companies expressing interest in trying their products. Most companies have been thrilled to have someone try their products and to write review. I recently heard back from one of the companies. Here is their response:

Dear Holly,

Thank you so much for your request to review Bragg products on your blog. One of the requirements for us is that we share the same health philosophy –
or a similar health philosophy. We usually work with healthy lifestyle bloggers on reviews, not so much giveaways.

Are you familiar with the Bragg Healthy Lifestyle Philosophy?

How many readers do you currently have on your blog?

I looked at your blog and as much as I enjoyed it, I noticed that a lot of the food you write about on your homepage is processed and on the unhealthy side and I know that Patricia might have some concerns about that. But it might be a way to introduce and inspire a healthier
lifestyle to your readers?

Kind Regards,
Susanne

This email pissed me off. Am I just being too sensitive? I never claimed to have a perfect diet only full of whole foods and unprocessed ingredients.  Are my foods on the unhealthy side? It bothered me to read this, because I don’t agree with her, but at the same time, is she right?
If the post she looked at was my State Fair post, then sure, you could say my diet is full of processed foods. But that was one day out of the whole year! I don’t eat that way every day. Does she consider peanut butter processed? I do, but I wouldn’t put it in the same category as a Snickers bar. “Processed” to me could be interpreted differently, but to me “unhealthy” cannot really be taken the wrong way.
This letter infuriates me because it is this kind of talk that results in me feeding into my Holly Monster. I let in self doubt when I read this email. I went back to those feelings of “I’m not healthy enough to have a blog, what am I even doing?” Once again I had to constantly remind myself that I am doing the best I can. I am moving forward towards my goal of peace with food and my body.
Why should I let a complete stranger (who has seen only little snippets of me) define me? I shouldn’t, and yet I do. I never claimed to be perfect and I refuse to completely deprive myself of any food. If that isn’t good enough for this woman or her company, then I certainly don’t want to give her any business.
But seriously, this needs to stop, I can’t give anyone power over me and my feelings. I know who I am, I know what I eat, I know my feelings. This woman knows nothing, and passed (what I think is) an unfair judgment on me and my blog.
So I eat processed foods now and then. I drink Diet Coke most days. I ate a Deep Fried Reese’s PB Cup at the MN State Fair. I eat chocolate chips in my oatmeal. I’ve eaten at McDonalds (THE HORROR!!!). But I also eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean proteins and nuts. I aim for balance, not perfection. If I eat some foods that are not “whole and clean” does that throw away my whole diet? I’m trying to get away from that all-or-nothing attitude and yet that email feeds right back into those feelings.
For now, I suppose I should take my seat as the Queen of Processed Foods on my Spam Throne 🙂

I may not be the healthiest blogger, but I try to keep a balance, and I try my best. That is all I can do!
Psst: check out Tina’s 30 DSLR today!
Questions:
How would you describe your diet? My diet is all about balance: getting in fresh produce, lean proteins, healthy fats with a splash of indulgence now and then.
Are you a saver or a spender? What are you saving for, or what do you like to spend your money on? I am definitely a saver, and Jason and I are saving towards a new bedroom set and hopefully a nice vacation in the Spring.
Holly

boo on that email! that would piss me off too. obivously tho this woman is clearly only judging you from whatever little snapshot she saw of your blog, not you as a whole person as clearly you are awesome! it is so hard not to let other’s preceptions of us become bothersome.

i am a saver all the way. sometimes i wish i wasnt tho. i freak out if my savings goes under a certain amount but you never know when you might get hit by a bus and need some extra money! ish, that is so morbid.

  2. Alex @ IEatAsphalt Says:

I’ve never tried any of the Bragg products before but am totally turned off from the company. Do they want you to be completely crunchy, growing your own veggies and eating raw? Please girl, forget them and move on to a better company.

  3. Myra Says:

Holly, please forget about these self-important people. They are just pissed because they MISS eating processed foods. They looked at your state fair pictures and got super jealous. They think they know what’s better for you than you do, and that’s just wrong. FORGET ‘EM.

  4. leianna Says:

Wow, that email would get to me too because life is about balance! I think you are healthy, but not perfect which is how it should be. I would like for them to document their “perfect” eats.
Try not to let it get to you, let it make you stronger!

  5. Laury @thefitnessdish Says:

WOW!!! Yeah, they looked at your blog on the WRONG day…you were just showing your balance, and how you enjoy going to the fairs–but overall eat healthy..I bet they didn’t look at the archives! I would be p*$$ed as well..yikes!

    I consider myself balanced, 85/15 or 90/10.

    And, I am a spender….

you are so funny with the log cabin theme, totally shows what part of the world you live in, love it.

  6. jess Says:

I’m offended for you! That was awful. I try to eat healthy and limit the processed foods too.
I can get over the log cabin theme bedroom group as long as you decorate with cute bedding. :o)

  7. glutenfreemuse Says:

Holly, I can totally relate! Nutzo did the same type of thing to me, but decided that they had already found the most beneficial bloggers for them to partner with. I was super happy to win your giveaway so I could say, Ha nutzo! Take that!

Don’t listen to braggs, they are super weird people anyways 🙂

I strive for balance and try to save, but I don’t hold back when it comes to good food!!

    You’re awesome, girl!
    Alyssa 🙂

  8. Michelle Says:

I think I would be pissed off too! That’s not how I see your blog at all. And I liked the fact that you posted your state fair eats – sometimes eating treats and showing them is a radical act for a healthy living blog but it SHOULDN’T be because that is healthy living. If you were eating lettuce and tofu all day, you’d be accused of orthorexia! You can’t win can you?!

Anyway, looking at the Bragg products, their Braggzyme supplement says it contains: “500 mg Proprietary BRAGGZYME Blend (Nattokinase, Serrapeptase, Bromelain, Papain, Protease, Lipase)”. I have no idea how you can extract those enzymes without “processing.” Just sayin’. I have a feeling they are not squeezing apples into pill form. (Wait, isn’t that technically processing too? :P) You get my drift.

  9. Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) Says:

Instead of feeling rejected by that company, why not reject THEM. Maybe you do have different health philosophies. Maybe you strive for a healthy balance, and they strive for perfection. Maybe their philosophies do not fit it with the message you promote.

Either way, “healthy” means different things to different people, and if you find what works for you, then GREAT! And don’t let those emails get you down 😉

    Chin up girlie!!

Oh, PS- I love cabin/mountain-esque furniture! SO COZY 🙂

  10. Heather Says:

yeah, that email isn’t cool. i wouldn’t pair with a company like that anyway!

and p.s. i love that furniture! no shame in mountain-esque style!

  11. Kristy Says:

Wow! I would be totally pissed too! WE ARE HUMAN!!! And to make a decision on 1/8 of your entire blog is crazy!! Who would want to partner with a company like that?! Don’t let it define you, you are much better than them! And as for the furniture I think it’s great! 🙂 and the last pic is hilarious! :)))

  12. Maria @ Oh Healthy Day Says:

I know what one Bragg just accomplished: turning me off from their company and their products. Don’t let those demons get to you…I actually look up to you and your eating habits because they are so healthy and balanced.

  13. eatmovelove Says:

Wow. That email pissed me off, so I can only imagine. My self-esteem and confidence is poor enough as it is without someone telling me sh*t. God – imagine if she seen my site…carrot cake and pizza :(. I wouldn’t want to wake up to an email like that either after eating myself sick again every night.

Don’t listen to the NaySayers – their products aren’t worthy of your site.

  14. Holly @ Self-love and Running Says:

What a judgmental email. I think that balance and moderation is key in any diet. Sometimes we eat processed foods. It happens. But does that make you unhealthy? No. Not when you’re taking in a lot of fresh fruits and veggies, dairy and good proteins. Don’t let that woman decide what healthy is to you. I would probably also email her back and let her know that you felt unfairly judged and that you don’t plan on purchasing any of their goods if this is the encouragement they provide for people to be healthy.

  15. Katie Says:

Oh Holly Im sorry you got that email : p but you know what, pay no attention girl! I get mean comments / emails too, it doesnt even phase me, some peeps just have nothing better to do!

Im all about balance, I live a balanced lifestyle when it comes to eating for sure!

LOVE the bedroom furniture you want, I think its very pretty!!!

  16. mia Says:

    Holly,
You work very hard at stricking a healthy balance. And you have introduced me to alot of healthy new products. I love your furniture style too!
My husband and I get alot of enjoyment from your posts.
Holly Monster, Mia Monster…we all have one. The important thing is that we are aware of them. And the More important thing is that we’re willing to work at taming them. Holly, you are a beautiful human being-inside and out. We appreciate your transparency. It takes alot if nerve to put yourself out there day after day. You are to be admired.

  17. theemptynutjar Says:

They are not worth your time. Don’t give another second of your lovely energy and personality to something so meaningless. Craziness. I hate things like that (it happens to us all for sure.)

  18. Kylie @ A Hungry Spoon Says:

Holly–I discovered your blog recently and I’ve really been enjoying it! It’s obvious that you work very hard to strike a healthy balance in your lifestyle, which is what I (and I’m sure most readers!) want to read about. Bragg is the company that’s missing out, and they’re just not worth your time!

Keep up the great work, and I hope you have a wonderful day…you deserve it!

  19. Tina Says:

I’m pissed for you!! That is uncalled for to judge your eating habits. I think striving for balance over perfection is a healthier way to live because you care for your mental health too. Processed doesnt equal unhealthy and indulging every now and then doesn’t either. you keep doing what you’re doing because it is wonderful!

  20. Stephanie@ avocado nation Says:

I’m definitely a saver and I am glad I am! Otherwise I would never have been able to leave my job and move to Cali.

I am appalled that someone would write you that letter. I really can’t believe that someone would actually pass judgment on your diet that way. It’s just….unbelievable. What a horrible woman and I am ashamed of Braggs, a company that I usually love!

  21. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin Says:

Wow, I can’t believe that email! If they really do feel that way, I think it would have been better if they had just ignored your request– why send you an email insulting your diet?! Geez…

I totally agree with you– I think it’s a very healthy mindset to eat a balance of processed AND whole, natural foods! Good for you! Don’t let that email get to you.

As far as savings go, I think I’m pretty good at it, but I could be WAY better lately! With wedding season in FULL swing, I’ve been spending way too much on travel, bridesmaid dresses, and beauty splurges!! Bad me… hopefully I’ll be able to start saving for Christmas travel and gifts soon!!

  22. tia Says:

That would piss me off too, it would have been pretty simple for them to send a simple pass email instead they take the opportunity to more or less insult you? You’re taking the right steps in the right directions, trying to lead the healthiset lifestyle you can, learning along the way just like everyone else, no one is perfect. Man, what a classy company. I bet the person who sent you that email has indulged in some fast food in the last year, so don’t fret over it. FYI: The picture was all kinds of awesome lol

  23. Becky Says:

That’s actually shocking! It’s so judgmental and completely untrue. I appreciate that you posted the email because I will now stay away from Braggs products. I think they are the party with the unhealthy philosophy. I’m always impressed by your eats. I think we all eat some unhealthy stuff from time to time…it’s normal!

Tell that Holly Monster to stay away. You are perfect as you are.

  24. Healthy Coconut Says:

Holly, don’t mind that email. Obviously they weren’t doing a good job if all they looked at was that 1 post for the one day.

If you feel healthy, you are energetic and you are active…then it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks right?

I went with the fiance to a huge Bass Pro Shop store and he took a long time looking at fishing gear so I just sat by the display of Cabin furniture with a fireplace while I waited for him. It felt very comfy and warm. I liked it.

  25. Shanna, like Banana Says:

ARgh…I’d be pissed too. Healthy living is a personal choice and how you decide to frame it, structure it, and execute it is up to you. I love that you are not nutzo for super pure foods because to me, that’s not realistic.

Keep eatin’ the deep fried reeses pb cups and savor every bite!

  26. Alycia [Fit n Fresh] Says:

Yeah I would totally be pissed off about that email too. I love a lot of the points you made and I’m the same way. I may not eat 100% healthy, but I do eat balanced and to me, that’s better.

Way to go with sharing this!! I’m so glad you voiced your opinion – and I hope they’re reading it 😉

  27. Angela (the diet book junkie) Says:

that’s a bunch of $#@%. obviously they didn’t read your blog, because then they’d know what they were talking about! please don’t take it to heart, Holly, they’re so not worth it.

i would say i’m not a big spender….at all! i don’t like a lot of clutter so if i don’t absolutely need something, i won’t buy it. that said, when we go back to Canada i always get on a major shopping spree!! stuff there is SO cheap compared to Australia. (everything is 30-50% less.) we’re going to visit next month so i better start saving…. 🙂

  28. Mary @ Bites and Bliss Says:

Oh my gosh, she crossed the line with that. You have every right to be upset for somebody defining you like that after only reading a post or two. I can see why she’d think it’d be a good way to “introduce healthy food to your readers” but umm..you eat healthy most of the time! Gah, like any of us are perfect and eat clean 24/7. That’s ridiculous. haha, sorry..but I’m getting peeved off for you. 😛

Alright, so onto a brighter subject so the whole comment isn’t bashing. That bedroom set’s awesome! It’s all so comfy looking. I love cabin furniture. 🙂 In fact, cabin houses are abolsutely amazing in general.

  29. runningwithsass Says:

that SO would have hurt my feelings! This is why I only blog about running and mental health and not food b/c I eat so poorly compared to most “food bloggers” out there and it would just be embarassing!

Dont let it get to you, its their loss!

  30. Wendy Says:

Oh, screw ’em. I bet they did look at your state fair post and if that’s the main one they focused on, it was just bad timing. Don’t take it personally, Holly!!
I really, REALLY love that bedroom set. So rustic and cabin-y and woodsy and beautiful. You have spectacular taste! 🙂

  31. Jessica (Fit and Clean) Says:

Wow! Is business that good for their company that they think that they can act like that? Ugh. I am totally not supporting that kind of elitist attitude with my hard earned money. I wonder what that woman who wrote the email eats? Since 3/4 of the US are overweight….just sayin’.

Don’t doubt what you’re doing. I would take the anger and fire back an email at her and let her read everyone’s comments, because we all support YOU! 🙂

  32. leashieloo Says:

Ew!! I’d be annoyed too! So the only way to be healthy is to be a total fascist about it?? Someone said it up there but boo on her indeed! Without those little treats every now again, life would suck!

  33. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) Says:

I have had a fu*cking awful day and have had kinda the same blog related sh*t. Not regarding being healthy enough to review bragg’s but lots of icky crap. I wont elaborate but take my word for it and this type of letter you received just makes me want to cry. WHY do people judge so quickly. I am soooo sorry!!!!!!

I never, ever think your blog is a processed food haven. No! And even if it was, why not just ignore you. Why did they even write that. I dunno. It’s like negative comments, just click off the page, don’t leave one!

Girl, I feel for you. I am soooo sorry. Many times I wonder, why do I blog? And I can kinda bet you’re wondering that too right about now!

  34. mostlyfitmom Says:

Love the furniture! I’m a spender these days – dental school is not cheap! And neither are kids. And neither is Sephora. LOL

As for that e-mail – bah! I think balance is the way to go. You’re obviously striving to be healthy, and to me that means the occasional indulgence is almost a requirement for mental health. I would say you eat way less processed foods than I do, and I consider my diet pretty darn healthy compared to the average person. Don’t worry about what they say! Just keep on doing what you’re doing. I think you’re awesome! 🙂

  35. carly Says:

Meh. I don’t think you’re being over-sensitive, but I also don’t think that woman put much thought behind that email. Delete, and move on! 😀

And DON’T feed the Holly Monster. She’s a biatch who only gets angrier when fed.

  36. pursuitofhealthfulness Says:

That e-mail is simply ridiculous. It’s not in the writer’s authority to judge your over-all eating based on a few pages of your blog.

However, just brush it off your shoulders. That one opinion doesn’t matter!

  37. Lindsay @ Pinch of Yum Says:

Oooh that email makes me mad!!! Balance is everything girl!

  38. Anne @ Food Loving Polar Bear Says:

I would be SO mad if I got an email like that. I don’t have THE perfect diet either, but I’m trying hard and I want balance.

Let it go, it’s not worth it! your blog is cool and you do your best here, chin up 🙂

  39. 40apples Says:

Holy crap, Holly, that emails makes me MAD!! I apologize – I’m seeing this a bit late, but I just had to share my thoughts…… I have SEEN with my own eyes how incredibly healthy your blog and your eating habits are. Honestly, that woman’s claim is entirely unfounded! But that’s beside the point – the point is her email was condescending and unnecessarily critical. Do NOT let that affect you. I hope all your readers’ comments are proof enough that you’re a fantastic healthy living blogger!!!

  40. Chelsea @ Strawberry Sweat Says:

Thanks for posting that email! Really, what nerve that woman had. No one eats PERFECTLY all the time, and really, you are living the healthiest life for YOU! I like how you post your real eats!

    Keep it up 🙂

  41. spabettie Says:

wow, I saw that first photo and thought it WAS your room, and was thinking, beautiful! why does she want new furniture? 😉

I am extremely disappointed at this judgmental and inaccurate view. I use (use to use??) Bragg products, and now I am perplexed. I definitely do not want to encourage that slight thinking. Are we unworthy of such a product if we eat different from Patricia’s view?

oh, and *the nerve* to ask How many readers do you have? PLENTY. Let’s see what they all think, Hmm??? 😉

GAAH. I am upset for you.

  42. lisa Says:

that is FREAKY, Capital F Freaky!! They probably want you to only drink the Bragg’s kool-aid too.

Whateve! I found Eden Organics ACV to be just as yummy and “with the “mother” ” as Bragg’s and it’s almost a buck cheaper. Boo to them.
plus i bought their stupid aminos and my husband can’t have them cause they have something he’s allergic to (i forget which ingredient) so we buy Coconut Aminos instead.

  43. Allie (Live Laugh Eat) Says:

Ughhh I hate when people make assumptions. HATE. I have thin skin and while I’ve been lucky to have only a few negative comments come my way, they make me think twice about whether or not I should continue blogging.

Bragg is losing out on a review from you.

  44. Tweets that mention Spam Queen | The Couch Potato Athlete -- Topsy.com Says:

[…] This post was mentioned on Twitter by lisa m, Kristina. Kristina said: I DO NOT love this letter… http://bit.ly/dfuoQV what do YOU think about it? #notinbalance […]

  45. Muffins, Mocktails & Many Thanks | The Couch Potato Athlete Says:

[…] I wanted to bring up “the letter” I received from a Bragg rep. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the supportive comments! I tell myself that “I don’t […]

  46. Matt Says:

Forgive my language, but that bitch needs a slap in the face. If someone wrote that to me, I would be really pissed and offended. So what if you ate some fried food at the state fair? Just because she doesn’t eat it, doesn’t mean that you can’t. Do not let someone tell you how to eat.

Honestly, I will probably never buy anything from Braggs. I never have, but I am not going to buy something from a company that has employees like that. They just lost a review and a potential customer.

  47. caronae Says:

She is obviously crazed! Run for the hills! No seriously, though, I’m pretty sure you are quite healthy — being so obsessive that you never even have a treat or have fun is NOT healthy. You are healthy. Keep up the good work. 🙂
